hey guys im new to the forum. thanks for having me. i have switched
from a powerstroke to 6.5 turbo diesel. 1998 gmc sierra 3500 service
truck 4x4 automatic 168,000 miles. i just bought the truck and
i did make it home, but with no overdrive. i flew to philadelpia pa
after i purchased on ebay. the transmission will not shift to overdrive.
fluid is very dark. the dealer i got the truck from is sending me a
rebuild kit and converter, i have to pay the labor. i almost have the
tranny out, but cant get the transfer case out. it hits the torsh bar.
will this bar need to be moved. thanks for any help.

To replace the clutch in mine (manual trans), I had to drop the t-case separately from the transmission to clear the crossmember.

but not enough clearance. mine is automatic. we took the crossmember
out , but there is a stabilizer bar in the way.

the fluid in the tranny was dark brown and tranny slipping badly.
i didnt hook up a scanner,but im pretty sure it needs rebuilt.
the dealer i got the truck from is sending me a rebuild kit.
i have friend who owns tranny shop. he is doing it for free.
i just cant get the transfer case out. it will move back, but hits
a stabilizer bar. what else do i need to move for more clearance.
the bar is bolted to the frame on both sides of the truck with
rods that bolt up front to the front wheels. thanks for the help

Jack both front wheels to unload the torsion bars. If there's still a load on them, loosen the cam adjustment bolts until they back off the stops (count and note the cam bolt turns so you can return the preload setting). Remove the bolts that secure the torsion bar cross member to the frame, and lower it out of the way. Reverse order when done.

thanks alot for the help. my buddy and i agreed that this bar must be
moved, but we were afraid of messing up something.

I remember that things weren't exactly easy - required some fussing and maneuvering. But with the rear driveshaft removed, I was able to wiggle the t-case around and out the back. Much less work than messing with the torsion bars.

If the truck is off the ground, the tranny/T case fastened to a tranny jack.

Slide the tranny/Tcase back as far as you can go, then drop the nose of the tranny and then drop the entire assembly down and out towards the front.

Taking out the Torsion bar cross member is a Royal PITA and at times just a lot more work than you need to do.

Just be sure to unbolt the converter and slip it back into the bell housing.

I have done this trick on a couple and it does work.
