On the '83 with the factory 2 filter system and an extra pre-filter close to the tank, the problem began with the typical clogged filter surging and loss of power. I changed the pre-filter since this is usually the culprit. Started it up and it ran for about a minute, then it shut down by itself. Could not restart it.

Cracked open and bled 4 injectors 5 times with each time seeing fuel dribble out. No start, not even a fire.

Opened the firewall filter, it was half empty. Filled it, ran the electric fuel pump and saw fuel weeping at the out line on the manifold secondary filter I cracked open. So I know fuel is getting to the IP. Then bled 4 injectors again with a plentiful supply of fuel weeping out. Still no start, not even yet a fire.

Can a 6.2 be flooded? Everything was running great until today when I started getting the occasional surge, then it got worse quickly.

Glowplugs?

Since you're getting fuel out of the injector lines the pump is actually working (fuel shutoff solenoid included), the quantity might be the issue though.

Stand down people. Operator stupidity here. GP's are fine and I also checked the fuel shutoff solenoid. Turned out to be a combination of a slightly inaccurate fuel gage and an empty tank!

Trying to diagnose the problem this morning, I grabbed 5 gallons of fuel to fill the new filters, old ones needed replacing anyway. I noticed the old firewall filter was half empty again??? Threw the remainder of the 5 gallons into the tank. She fired right up and ran like a top.

Headed off to the fuel station and put in a total of 39 gallons, including the 5 from the can, into my 40 gallon tank! So what I thought was a clogged filter was just the air being sucked in to the system from a gallon or so of fuel sloshing around in the tank. Guess the dribbles at the injectors were just residual stuff pumping out.

Thanks!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOPS  An empty tank, OMG.

Haaaaaaaaaaa been there done that a time or two myself over the years.

An old 82 Blazer did that trick to me one morning heading to work, gauge said 1/4, Noooooooooo that sucker was flat EMPTY.

Tough to get the thing primed while alongside the road with NO TOOLS :(

Glad it was nothing serious.
