2004-5 D/A 3500 crew LB. What is the average life of the universal joints? Thanks All

That's a tough one. Typically I expect the lower rear joint to fail first, but it seems the Dmax's are taking the one at the transfer case out first. I did one on my 2005 at 80-something K. Many have had early wheel bearing issues yet at 93k+ I have had none.

I've not had to replace the u-joints in my 2001 GMC with 86,000 miles yet. However, through the years, I've had to replace more u-joints at the trans output than at the rear diff in the various vehicles I've owned. The u-joint angularity at the rear diff can be greater and more variable, which may help to improve the distribution of the lube within the joint.

Of course, water entering a joint will quickly ruin them. This is why I prefer the factory sealed (non-greaseable) u-joints - the seals are better. Factory sealed u-joints last longer for me.

I just replaced mine last week. The middle one (next to the carrier bearing) was squeaking like crazy but only in reverse.

173,000 miles on it.

Replaced all three while the driveline was out.

Just changed the back one in the Yukon today. Sounded like a bird sometimes at low speeds and occasional mysterious vibration.
