I have a 2002 3500 with 8.1(496)and allison my allison is making a whining noise on warm up and lower gears if anybody has any ideas i would greatly appreciate it.

When is the last time you did a fluid and external filter change? What did the fluid look like?

If the noise you're hearing is something new and different, then there may be a problem. On the other hand, if you're new to the truck, the Allison does produce some whine when cold - it's normal.

Yes I am new to the truck I got it first of march but I guess I'll find out more when I put the gooseneck and tractor behind it if I have any real problems

I just recently bought a 2002 GMC 3500 with 8.1(496) with allison and under 2,000 miles since last oil change its down a qt it has 84,000 on it appreciate any feed back on this matter.:confused:

A quart in 2,000 miles isn't a problem. Sure, we'd all like our engines to not consume any, but the fact is that most do. If it was a quart in 500 miles, I'd be concerned. If it was a quart in 1000 miles, I might have a compression test performed, and I might replace the valve stem seals. But a quart in 2000 miles, I'd just drive it (and check the oil once in a while)... ;)
