Winter Oil

I have a 1998 6.5TD i moved to a colder climate and need a recomendation on oil to use for weather below -20C. I have always used Rotella T 15W40 and have bought rotella T 0W40 synthetic. is this viscosity and choice of synthetic ok?

I been using Rotella T 10w30, supposed to have pour point to -45C. I use it all year . 10w30 was recommended for new AMG motor from Western Turbo.

I have a 98 6.5, have used synthetic 0W-40 oil since new, no problems.
I rarely have to add any oil between changes. Due to the wild weather
changes we have here, I use it year round.

seems to be that rotella is a fairly well chosen product here.

i run rotella semi-synthetic year round. so temperatures ranging from -25C to +45C

I'm a recovering lube engineer, and I spent time in the employ of Shell.

First, IMHO, only Mobil Delvac can approach Rotella T's performance (Kendall Super DIII single grade is also superb).

Rotella T 15W-40 is preferred year-round, unless there are cold-cranking issues. The "W" weight is at cold temps; the other ("40") is at operating temps. I would stick with xW-40 in every case.

Synthetic offers very little advantage unless the vehicle sits a lot. Diesel motor oil is discarded when the additive package is depleted; it is changed to rid the crankcase of contaminants, not because the base stock has deteriorated. Synthetic has a slightly greater resistance to deterioration.

Esso makes an excellent 0w-40 semi synthetic oil. I have run it in my truck for years.
I was up in Fort McMurray on a cold winter day (-34) and the breaker for the block heater had tripped.
The engine spun over just fine. Truck sounded like it was going to gernade when it caught , but it started;)

I just can't see myself running synth year round as you still have to change oil at the same intervals you would if you used dino. For me it's just not economical. If I lived in a warmer climate I would use dino year round.
