I have read many methods for ascertaining the ingress of combustion gasses into the cooling system. But one method I have found very successful is to place a funnel tightly into the filler and fill the system until about a third the way up the funnel.
I then run the engine at a steady speed. If the system "burp's and the coolant level goes down then I then add more coolant until the coolant maintains a steady level.
If the system continues to "burp" but the coolant stays at the same level in the funnel then I am very sure that there is a combustion chamber or compressor leak into the cooling system.
Hope you find this useful.
