Is my Air Filter box missing something

I changed the air filter on my 'new' 04 2500HD tonight and I think my air box is missing something. SHouldn't have a snorkle or something on the side of this box?

That's normal. Early models had a snorkel, but it caused issues with the filter element (water/debris contamination). Later models have the open side (where the snorkel used to be), and a mastic covering over the fender hole (it appears yours is gone....the adhesive lets go after a while). Early models were updated by GM under a recall campaign, if the customer needed or requested it.
