After pumping the primer and bleeding the air out, does the primer stay hard? or does it go soft after driving for awhile?

It will go soft again the moment you release the system pressure. Either by opening the bleeder, or running the engine. The primer only pulls fuel from the tank, and pushes it to the pump (held with check valves in the filter assy). Once the system is no longer under pressure, the primer goes soft.

Add a lift pump and primer stays hard (when running) fuel stays liquid, filters work better etc.

The source of my problem was a chipped o-ring; guess after many years of bleeding....the o-ring finally failed. I would suggest all owners consider replacing the bleeder plug assembly every 5 years.....a cheap preventitive measure.

Better yet add the bleeder valve kit:

Much better than the plastic screw.
