sometimes black smoke, sometimes not

Under hard acceleration I will often have black smoke with less power and then other times I will have no smoke and more power. any thoughts??

Do you have gauges?

Sounds like you have times when you have no boost.

No gauges but I think I can use a friends scan tool and go for a drive. What do you think would make it intermittent?

Loose hose, cracked hose, sticking wastegate arm, broken wire to boost sensor or wastegate solenoid, Ect.

mikeC is right, gauges will tell the whole story,when you're smoking your boost is probably ZERO.....good luck

1500 or 2500/3500???

if 1500, i think egr malfunction. take off turbo-power plastic cover and discard, disconnect vacuum line to egr valve, insert #6 panhead screw into egr valve vacuum port, reconnect vacuum line. simple way to disable egr system.

2500/3500... not gettning boost for some reason. wastegate open..? control solonoid broken. or if mechanical boost controled wastegate, sticking/seizing actuator...
