Which Motor Oil?

Going to be time to change the oil in my new 94 turbo soon (153K miles). I've always run straight 30 weight in all my vehicles. In my 82 6.2 I run Shell Rimula or rotella (half the time she starts w/ out glow first start of the day!)

Question:

the oil filler refers to multi viscosity I would say bump that and run straight 30, but being it has a turbo I thought I'd get the ya'lls input!

I have used the Shell Rotella 15-40 for years and it's a good oil. 2 Years ago I went with the Rotella 5-40w synthetic I just pick up a couple of gallons at WalMart for about $12 gallon. I use it in everything year round. You don't have the cold to worry about like us in Montana but is sure is nice with 5 cars and pickups and tractors lawn mowers and pumps to have to use only one oil.

Yes. Switch at any time. Just make sure the oil is "C" rated (CI, CH, etc.)

No additives necessary, IMO. Dr. Lee has an opinion on additives. Have a look at his topics.

I've been using Amsoil for years. 15-40 HD Diesel $ Marine for my Diesels. They also have a 10-30, but is not recommended for the 6.5L. You don't need light weight oil in FL, anyway.

Did you look in the owners manual? I think it says you can use straight 30 weight as long as it is c rated. (haven't looked in a few years though.

I am using the $12/gallon 5W40 from Walmart. It makes a huge difference in the winter for starting and warm-up.

I have had my 1984 truck since 1991, and I have noticed that Generous Motors does NOT, repeat NOT, send me a new Owners Manual every time the API (American Petroleum Institute) issues an upgraded specification (CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, CI-4) for diesel oil.

But you SHOULD use the latest and greatest. When my truck was new, 15W-40 multigrade had not proved its ability to lubricate better than 30 wt., but now it has. I have always used the latest spec 15W-40 both in California and here in Miami. Everyone else should too, except those that see prolonged sub-zero (F) temperatures in the winter. They should use 5W-40 synthetic.

I was worried at first about new leaks, but so far all is well. I thought the pressure would be lower with 5w40 but it stays with what 15w40 did. I plan to stay with it.

I run synthetic Mobil Delvac 1 or Rotella full synthetic (both 5w-40) in the winter and either Mobil Delvac 1300 15w-40 or Shell Rotella 15w-40 in the summer. I run the synthetic in winter to gain the benefit of easier starting. Still dump the oil at 3-5k to get the soot out as I don't have bypass filtration.
Nearly 200,000 miles, still starts and runs like new.

Has anyone seen the new Power Service diesel lube oil extender? I bought a jug at Wal*Mart yesterday and plan on using it to add to my Shell Rotella 5 w 40 synthetic. It is supposed to supplement additives for extended drains. I have a bypass oil filter, and change every 6-7 thousand miles.

Hope you survived! I have always used delvac 1300 15-40 every 3000-3500miles. When my block cracked and I tore it down I was amazed at how clean and new the insides were. I have tried the Mobile 1 5-40 synthetic but it seemed to create leaks in my truck. Maybe with the new motor/oil lines it will do better. Haven't tried it yet. I have a 84 6.2 van and it always had sae30 in it from the original owner, I switched over to 15-40 with no bad effects, actually seems to run better/smoother. I can not make myself run longer than 3500miles on a change so even with my bypass filter I would never see the benifits of longer change times. I would think down south that you should be able to use the regular dino oil without any drawbacks. Dr. Lee says to use 1/2 bottle of STP 4cyl formula for some additional added additives :D !!! Who knows ????

Amsoil synthetic 15-40. Run it 20k and change the filter every 4 to 5k. One of very few Real and True synthetic oil's.
