forgive me, I am new to the game and am not sure who made the transmissions for the 97 k2500 6.5 turbo diesel. I hear a lot of talk about allison transmissions on the newer dura max but did not know if allison mad the transmissions on the older turbo diesels too?
Thanks,
Nate

Nope. The Allison tranny is/was only available on the 2001+ Duramax Diesel and 8.1L gasser trucks. If you have a 1997 Diesel with an auto, it came with a GM 4L80E tranny. The gasser 1500's came with a 4L60E, but all Diesels of that year got the 4L80E.

Just about as good as autos get.

IMO, the 4L80 is about as stout as you can get with an older electronic automatic. know of guys who have regularly towed 5 ton loads with their 4L80 equipped trucks and haven't had problems.
of course, the NV4500 is something else, if you can get it. :D
