I am looking for a mid-2000's Duramax/Allison Combo. I will need to be able to use a hydraulic PTO pump on a service body. How can I easily tell if the transmission is PTO ready? I was told by the upfitter that not all Allisons can accept a PTO, even if they have the PTO cover. He said that you need to be able to tell from the VIN but he didn't elaborate.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need a 2001 to 2004 LB7 VIN 1 (8th digit) for it to be PTO ready.

All Allison transmissions are PTO ready. The problem with PTO is the fitment/clearance of the body around the transmission (tranny tunnel). If your implement/pump will fit, it is PTO capable. The rest is in the PCM. Program the PCM for PTO function, and it's a done deal.

LLY, LBZ and LMM (VIN 2,D, and 6) pickups do not have the PTO gear on the rotating housing. They were only built with a tone ring for the turbine speed sensor. Now, if you are talking about chassis cab, that would be different. They have the PTO gear.

I would prefer a chassis/cab but probably will not be able to buy a used one like I am looking for. I was hoping to find a '04-'06 engine/truck combo. I know the engine from that era are very good performance and reliability wise.
I cannot use the newer trucks due to the idle issues with the dpf/emissions. I need to be able to use the truck at idle for at least 3-4 hours per day and I have been told from multiple sources that the dpf will plug and it will be a major headache. I have no wish to remove the emissions and void my warranty either, so I'm stuck with going with a mid 2000's.
What kind of head-ache would it be to make a non-pto ready DMAX into a PTO ready config? Thanks for your replies, I've tried this question on multiple sites and this is the best answers I have received so far.

Also, I am looking for a GM 3500 4x4 dually. Looking for a single cab but an extended cab might suffice. Truck cannot be a crew cab as the added length would make it too large to fit into tight spaces. I need the 9' bed also. I've checked truck trader, ebay, etc. I have an inquiry in with several dealers.
There are lots and lots of crew cabs out there but very few single cab 4x4 diesels with allisons.

I am not sure if just the tone ring can be removed and the PTO gear pressed on it's place or not. GM lists the following information:
2005 Model Year and older 29540518
2006-2008 Model Year and future 29542802
1-2-3-4, 4-5 Clutch
This number is for the assembly.
These numbers might not be current, but they will cross to the current in the parts catalog. An Allison dealer may be able to tell you if the gear can be done separately.
Either way, the trans has to come out and disassembled far enough to install these parts.

To install the PTO ring you need to do an entire tranny rebuild. Go GM. Cost savings of leaving off the PTO ring? $20 per tranny.
