I had apparently posted this in the 62 forum and it was suggested I post it here:

I currently run a 1995 GMC Suburban with the 6.5 Turbo. I'm looking for a second engine to rebuild to learn more about the engine and to have on hand for a replacement in the burb. The current engine has 275,000 miles on it and I hope to hit 400 thousand. BUT, I want to have a little insurance!

I have access to a working 6.5 in a pickup truck, currently available for $500 (for the whole truck). The tranny is bad.

My question is, can a 1993 6.5 be placed in a 1995. The 93 engine is all mechanical I believe, and not turbo; while the 95 is electrical, with turbo.

If nothing else, I might get the 93, let the local high school "play" with it, then sell it.

Thanks,

forbey

The 93 engine is compatible.

The only difference is the following items.

Timing cover needs to have the port for the crank sensor (94 and later)

Lower timing sprocket must be for the electronic engine ( Has the reluctor)

Need to use the later 94 and later ballancer with the shorter snout.

The injector lines must be for the DS4 IP (94 and later)

The rest of the package is good to go.

Thank you! I'll have to print out this list and save it for down the road.

You can take a stock 6.2, swap the timing cover, timing sprocket and ballancer plus the DS4 pump and install it right into the home of a 6.5.

The only difference is that the tops of the pistons on the 6.2 are not hard anodized.
