View Full Version : 89 V2500 burb with goodwrench engine
Hi all, I recently fell into a 96 6.5 TD 2500 4WD burb and now am forced to egt rid of the old beast. She is a 89 V2500 4Wd suburban with a GM Goodwrench 6.2 NA engine and TH400 out of a CUCV. Trans probably had about 85k at this point. T-case is a NP241. the 6.2 has the DSG 2-4 main stud-girdle. Engine starts every time. Couple quick questions:
1. Is the GM Goodwrench engine a stronger 6.2 than the original 89 that was in it? It was put in supposedly in 92 by the PO.
2. The truck looks like hell. Not a straight panel on the body. But mechanically she is very sound. Just put a new Vista-pro ultra-radiator in her. She has the Pennisular High flow pump, new alt, A/C comp (which blows very cold) recent injectors and all the fluids are constantly changed, but she still looks like hell. Is it better to sell it outright, or should I part her out?
3. Any idea what she is worth? I ahve a few friends who claim they want to buy it, it is really great aroudn here for traveling cause it will hold all my long-boards and they are locked up and out of the weather/sun. The folks interested want it for the same reason I have it, cause it is cheap, no-hassle transportation.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

I believe a lot will depend on your location as well as how many want it. If it runs and does not let weather though and people would buy it sell it as is, or if you feel you will make more out of the parts, then part it out. Its a lot more work for you to part it but the chance is there that you will get more out of it.
Great advice. I will investigate the market a little more. Do you know what the background is on the goodwrench replacement engines? The PO told me the original one consumed its crankcase oil and burnt up a few years after he bought it new. I thought I had read somewhere that the goodwrench was a little better engine? THis is kinda important to me cause I have about four other 6.2's and the most important one (and only one other than the one in the 89 burb) has metal in the oil in the crankcase. Sick to myself about it. I think the el-cheapo AutoZone lifters hosed me on this one. Yes, I hosed myself. So if the goodwrench engine is better than most 6.2's I'll yank it and put it in the hummaneer. Thanks again!

If you live in salt country the rig likley has some body rust.
If the rig is free of major rust and is good transportation then snap a few pix and stick it up on Ebay.
I live out here in the west where it not all that uncommon to see 50's rigs still tooling around as daily drivers.
Good rust free 4x4's will sell on Ebay.
Sold a 95 Burb that had been wrecked after a tierod end broke and it found the ditch.
Fellow flew in from the east and did some repairs here and drove it home.
Hope this idea helps

Thanks Robyn! I probably should have disclosed the fact it is an insurance "Total Claim Lass" vehicle. It was hit from the side in about 07 and the ins company totaled it, that is how I ended up with her. THe body is rough, to say the least, but that is one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much, NO-ONE would consider pulling out in front of me. Not certain if they were intimidated by her, or feared I had no insurance! One time I got in a minor rear end and the cop told me (since the truck is registered in my company name) that "times must be rough!"
Is the GM Goodwrench a better engine or is that a myth? Thanks again!!
Jeff
The Goodwrench is just a factory Crate engine.
There should not be any difference between the stock engine and the crate engine.

well there sure is,.. one has a fancy sticker on it,. one doesn't,..:D

OMG :eek::eek: The FANCY STICKER:eek::eek:
Take a look at the block casting Number and the date code.
This will tell more of a story than anything else.
Crate engines are just production that was "Boxed up" instead of going into a rig is all.
My DaHooooley had a "Crate engine" with the Goodwrench STICKER  on it.
I removed the wretched little sticker when I rebuilt the engine.
Should have placed a Custom sticker "By Missy GoodWench" or ?????
Marketing hype.
All funs and giggles aside. Crate engines can be a wide range of stuff.
Back in the day, they could be Old production or be the latest design off the production line, you never knew unless you were real savvy and checked the date codes.
Early 506 Blocks that were scheduled for the 97 production were the worst of any 6.5 engines.
These had the 12mm Outer main bolts (center) plus they had the "then new" oil squirt passages and these were the large holes.
These blocks cracked in the main saddles and were overall a real sad sack.
Early 929 and 599 blocks were about the best of the lot.
The best stuff is the AMG/GEP current production.
Check them numbers :)
Missy
Thanks Robyn!
Great info. I will probably end up parting it out. Doubt anyone wants to pay the break-over $1k - going on craigs list tonight, so we shall see. I will check nums though cause I am interested in the nums on my new 96 w/6.5 as well. Thanks again!
