Well i found a truck yesterday and its a 1999 gmc 3500 hd flatbed with 3500lb crane and liftgate. its powered by the 6.5 turbo diesel and has a 5 speed 2wd 104k miles for $5000. I drove the truck and seen it start cold well 60 degrees and it started right up no white smoke and ran really smooth after about a min of warming up. My concern is that when i drove it, the power seemed low. im not use to driving diesels but expected more. also it seemed that it wouldnt be able to run any faster than 60mph without hitting redline.i like the truck but nervous about lacking power to tow.
A 99 3500 should be easily capable of doing plenty on the highway and not running at redline.
A 6.5, while not a rocket, should run right with a Vortec 454 (stock)
60 MPH should normally be around 2200 RPM unless the truck has 4.56 gears in the butt end.
If the truck is in otherwise nice condition the price is not bad.
Hope this helps
