View Full Version : MPG engine
I got a hefty grand wagoneer that I am putting diesel engine in. Trying to decide between the 6.5 and 6.2 turboed or non turboed.
I have feeling the 6.2 may be a bit of a dog in my rig but I'm not sure. It'd be a 3-4" lifted wag on 32s and it currently has 3.31 gears
What are you planning to use it for? As a highway cruiser your gearing is on the tall side but useable unless you have an OD tranny, but for any kind of off-road use you'll be in 1st & 2nd more often than drive. 3.73 would probably be a better choice in that case, and even 4.11s wouldn't slow you down too much on the road.
For a turbo, the first thing I'd do is find a truck from the same year range of the engine you're looking for and get inside framerail measurements. A Grand Wagoneer's a big vehicle so in all likelihood you'll have the needed depth & height, but a '99 6.5l TD barely fit in my '85 C1500 without notching the frame to clear the downpipe. Cooling may be an issue depending on the size of the stock radiator or on whether you can fit a 6.2l/6.5l radiator. Electrical is easy, use the stock AMC/Jeep senders (with adapters or bushings if necessary) and wiring, and the + coil wire will give the fuel solenoid ignition-hot power.
Are you going to adapt the stock driveline to the engine, or swap the whole thing in? I'd probably go the 2nd route if I was doing a swap like this. For one thing, I don't think AMC/Jeep had an automatic overdrive, and AFAIK Chrysler didn't put one in during their years either. A properly built 700R4 will give you a great bottom end and move that vehicle faster than it has any business going at the top end.
Anyway, assuming you have room for the 6.5l TD that's the one I'd choose. If not, an NA 6.5l or very late 6.2l, with one-piece rear main and (I think) 10mm instead of 12mm main cap bolts to help eliminate the cracking issues.
Forgot to mention it's for a DD. I was planning on swapping the whole drivetrain, the 727 3 speed would be terrible. I know the 6.5TD can fit, I've seen it happen
Member JeepSJ has done this exact swap, hopefully he will chime in here for you. You could also do a search on his build.
Ya I've tried to get a hold of JeepSJ through ifsja but to no avail

He'll respond, but it may take him a while. I think he posted his email addy in a thread I just can't remember if it was here or on IFSJA. Maybe he has it listed on one of the two forums in his info...
I am right now working on putting a 6.2 into my gladiator "cabbed" cherokee chassis. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the engine out front and then mock everything up so I know where to weld in the engine mounts. If I decide that it is too sluggish I'll throw on the banks turbo I have here, but I think the engine specs are close enough to the AMC 360 that it should be no problem.

Keep me posted :D :D
I am finishing up mine. Military take out from camp Lejune in Nc. Put infront of built 700R4 and so far I love it. I still have a strang knock/tick that I havre not located yet. It may be exhaust downpipe. I have the banks kit but included an intercooler. Two vids on utube under "hummaneer" posted the night we first put fuel to it. Couple other bugs like the alt backfeeding voltage&corrent once running that won't shut it down right. Drivetrain fits well. Used BIG griffin rad to keep cool. Good luck!
