View Full Version : IP Gear question
Removed Oil fill tube to check the bolts that attach the IP to the Drive gear.
There is a small circular metal tab (?) ( about the size of a nickel) sticking up in front of the IP drive gear. can only see top half.
Is this a Safty tab for the drive gear nut.
or foriegn material stuck there...
looks like it has some pliar marks on it.
Hope this is normal...????

That is a locking tab, and should be bent onto one of the flats of the bolt. Similar to some older wheel hubs. Some have them, some don't. I've seen them both ways from the factory, and M/Y didn't seem to make a difference.
Thank you, good news finially...

I may have been mistaken. I read your post again. Is the piece behind a gear bolt? Or is it "hanging" between the gear and cover? It may be a thrust tab that prevents runout of the gear from contacting the cover. Check again. Either way, it's suposed to be there.
Its in front of the gear nut between nut and cover,
about a 1/3 sticking up visable in oil filler tube hole .
Figured it was a safty think, but I never seen one
before so was asking to be sure,,,
thanks..
Hi there,
The little washer/metal tab is there to locate the plunger on the end of the fuel pumps.
I'm not sure if the elctronic pumps have the plunger on the end of the shaft but the old mechanical DB2 has it and the timing cover is probably the same on all engines.
Don't disturb this tab/washer as it will do no harm.
The pump drive gear bolts do not have lock tabs.
Be careful if re-torqueing the gear bolts (3 off them) as they can stretch and weaken if it is over done.
