I am looking at modding the upper intake on my truck by opening up the Intake Inlet and was wondering by removing the Upper Intake, do I have to set timing or is this only when removing the lower portion of the intake.

Would this be a good first mod for a stock truck?

Appologize if the question seems dumb but I am new to the diesels and do not want to mess with anything until I know for sure.

Is it okay to run some carb/Injector cleaner down the lower intake plenum while the upper is off to remove some build up or what can be used to clean this?

The only thing that I'd open up is to remove the ring in the middle of the upper plenum that's on the pre 1996 engines.

Here is one I had modified:

Besides that you're pretty much good.

No need in using any cleaner on the intake, unless you completly remove it, don't do this on the engine.

No worried about timing and such with the intakes on these engines, there isn't a distributor to mess with. The only thing running in the intake is air, no water like the gas burners.

Pulled off the upper intake and it looks like somone already beat me to it.

How much oil is too much inside the plenum? Seem to have a coating on the inside

It's difficult to tell really, these engines eat their own blow-by, and they make a fair amount.

The intake should be coated. It it looks like wet oil everywhere it's possible the turbo's blowing oil, but not necessarily.

Watch oil consumption, that will give you a good idea of what it's doing.
