Whats the purpose of this tool and is it really needed for head gasket replacement? •J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

The stock head bolts on the DURAMAX are a torque to yield bolt. This means you torque them to a spec with a torque wrench, then you have to torque them by a certain amount beyond that to obtain a certain amount of stretch. The angle meter allows you to measure these extra torques as they are not done by a torque reading on a torque wrench, but intead by a certain amount of turning. The torque angle meter measures this rotation so you can get the right amount of bolt stretch. I bought mine from AUTOZONE for about $10-15 IIRC, so it isn't that expensive to do it right.
