View Full Version : Wix fuel filter 33960
Any one have experience with Wix 33960 fuel filter?? Is the plastic housing a bad issue? Is the filtration fine enough, 2 micron @ ?beta???. I guess this is supposed to be better than the Wix 33910 filter? Sorry for the "20 question routine" but the 33960 just looks a little ... cheap. TIA bob...................

I use the 33910, but am not familiar with the 33960. I'll have to look into it. I would not be opposed to a plastic canister filter, if the internals were the same, and the plastic didn't fail under the underhood temps. How much less expensive is it? The fuel system (OEM) sees NO pressure, and very little vacuum, so plastic is not really an issue. Even if you have a lift pump, it should see very little pressure (10 PSI or less, typically). If they can do it cheaper (but just as good), and pass on the savings, I'm all for that.
Filter was $35 and change!
Supposed to be the 33910 replacement. Supposed to be same internals but plastic external to eliminate rust issues due to moisture problems w/ low sulfur fuel per my research on Wix site last PM. Moisture prob could be an issue w/ trucks that take a year + to reach filter change interval , just guessing. Emailed Wix for their perspective.
The Wix 33910 supersedes to 33960 which is changing to 33960XE.
I do not know what micron rateing 33960XE will be.
The 33910 and 33960 are nominal 4 micron rated.
Is not the GM/Isuzu/Bosch spec 2 micron??

As far as I could research the issue, the original filter on the 6.6 was a Racor built unit. Racor only produces paper in 2, 10 and 30 Micron porosity. Wix has gone to 4 micron because this is more than enough filtration (GM says 6 Micron) and it improves flow rate and durability.
FWIW, the newest Ford & Dodge diesels both use fuel filters w/ plastic housings. Neither are spin on through. Dodge uses a replaceable element type. Ford does the same for primary, then a secondary under the hood that (I think) you have to disconnect the lines to change.
I wonder if the plastic spin on works ok with your favorite filter wrench, strap wrench, etc. or if you have to be more gentle with it.
I disagree with 4 micron or 6 micron filter ratings being OK for GM 6.6L. One problem with the injectors has being erosion of the injector tips by fuel particles larger than 2 micron. GM speced 2 micron filter for the 6.6L.
