edited!! Is the 506 block better? what do these numbers mean?

i am trieng to get more info on this engine it has the 506 casting numbers and the bigger oil lines compared to my original 95 motor. what is the quality of this block compared to others?

on the back of the engine where the flywheel housing is it has the casting number of
12555506(I know these are the casting numbers)
on the opposite side it has the numbers d087
what does this second sequence of numbers mean?
hopfully someone here can de-sypher these(is that how you spell it?)
oh and there is also f14 and f141 on the back

Well, if you go with the 506, you sure get the bigger oil cooler line output/input but you'll have to change a few things, like new lines (already on the shopping list) and the oil cooler itself.
The 506 block still has issues with cracking in the bottom end because of the piston oil coolers that are drilled below the cylinder.

The 506 doesn't mean a whole lot. They were used from MY97 to present. The latest ones are the best, but bear the same casting number...

it is the f-code style what does this mean?
the block has an f on the rear

If you look on the side opposite the casting number, there will be a Julian date. Something like A098. This will tell the year that it was cast...

hopfully you guys can help me This would indicate April 08 1997 for the casting if I understand correctly.

D is 4th letter in alphabet=4th month

08= day of month

7= year

If you read my above post, I have listed out the month, day, and year of his block to be a 1997 casting. This would in all likelihood have come in a 1998 vehicle.


Another example that I have is A200

This is January 20 of 2000.

I'm curious to know what yours is???

I have the casting number from behind the driver's head: 10149599.
I don't have the one from the other side. I'm curious now so I'll get it sometime in the next few days when I'm out where the truck is parked (it's been having a long sleep :( ).
Hope it's not as tough to see as the other side!

I'm sure you know the reason for my curiosity about which block he got at that price. smile.gif

Oh, I see now. I thought that YOU had an engine from the 01-04 designation. For future reference, when you quote someone you can add between square brackets [quote] and the end quote is [/quote I left the close bracket off so it would remain visible.

So Asabadin has the 01-04 engine???

it would appear that what you bought was not a newer enhanced block, correct? Were you somehow misinformed? For others like myself considering engine purchases it would be nice to have a clarification.

i asked for a 506 block and that is what i got. had i known exactly what to ask for i would have got a 00- 01 block . oh well beats what i had in my 1995
