View Full Version : Install PS Pump Control Flow Valve Seal

I am installing the higher pressure PS Control Flow Valve (26095470) to remedy the weak PS/PB issue discussed here in the past. My Helms service manual says to 'lubricate the new rectangular section seal with power steering fluid' and 'install the rectangular section seal onto the control valve assembly.' This seal did not come with the new valve and the parts person at GM dealer says it is not available. Do I use the one from the old valve? Thanks.

Anyone changed this valve? This is to fix the problem referred to by MadMatt a while ago:

"#PIT3386D: Lack of Steering Assist or Shudder During Parking Lot Type Manuevers (Jul 31, 2006) " "In some cases, where the power steering pump pressures are at the low end of the specification, replacing the power steering flow control valve with P/N 26095470 may improve the concern."

(power steering flow control valve) I only helped build over 300 million and this is new to me. Power steering pumps have a pressure relief valve in them but thats only to protect the steering components if your tire/wheel hit a curb really hard. Police cars have a higher pressure valve in them because they do some high speed maneuvers.

It's a spool valve like in a tranny that, as I understand it, regulates pressure to the hydroboost. The concern is that ps and/or pb can be weak at low RPMs because the original valve in the ps pump does not allow enough pressure from the ps pump to the hydroboost which has to divide it between ps and pb. My GMC has this issue so I thought I would try this fix. I'm no expert in this - just what I have learned about from reading previous posts on the DP.

I've changed them,, just can't remember if that o-ring came on it or not. Seems like the valve came with a new one IIRC. Sorry I'couldn't be of more help.

The valve I got from GM didn't have a seal included.

The word is that seal is only available with the pump. Reuse the one you have.

That's what I thought. The GM parts guy told me I'd have to buy the whole pump to get the new seal. I'm nervous about using old seals but I'll just have to be really careful when swapping it. Thanks for your help.

If it's a standard size you might be able to get one form an O-ring distributor.

Have you ever searched GM power steering seal kits? We use to send out kits by the hundreds every week. You can find seal kit $10 rebuild kits $20 or just one seal for $3

The TSB for that (Bulletin # 05-02-32-008A) list part # for the O-ring seals as 26001594. Try that number and let me know if it helps.

I looked it up on gmpartsdirect and it is indeed a seal. I like to buy local if I can so I'll see if my GM parts guy can get it. It's about 6 bucks so it won't kill me to order one up if I can. Thanks for the heads up on this - much appreciated.

Awesome,, it's good to know you can get that seal seperatly. It's been a while since I did this repair i honestly couldn't remember how i got a new seal or if I reused the old one.

I've had the a new valve sitting in my office for about a year now, looks like its not an easy thing to replace. I'd like to hear if this cures your symptoms as my truck acts up as well. Any tips on replacement procedures would be greatly appreciated.

As soon as it warms up a bit I'll give it a go. Looks like doing it through the inner fender is the way to go.

Inner fender, good idea, I was going to remove the serp belt and my second alternator and come in from the top side. Looks like removing the skid plate and coming in from below may be a good way also. Any tips madmatt? Does this do the trick from your experience?

Rockauto.com has power steering pump seal kits for around 8 bucks, should have that seal.
