EGT probe

I recently got a banks EGT gauge and probe, but do not have any instructions.
I am going to mount it in the down pipe about 3" from the connection to turbo with a clamp setup.
What would you say is the minimum penetration into the exhaust stream the probe needs to have?

My instructions show about a inch, but it not Banks brand.
