This GM 6.5 held up very well while injesting the poison. Most gas engines tend to go within 1 or 2 minutes but this one held up longer. It must be due to the lubricating properties of diesel. But what an utter waste and lack of common sense. This truck now will be melted down to make foreign cars. The "Cash for Clunkers" program had little to do about saving gas but it was more about getting people to spend more money and assume more debt which in turn mainly helped out foreign manufacturers. At the same time, it got people out of their big luxury cars and into little tin cans.

Yep... Makes you sick.
I was at a yard the other day to pick up a CL item. Just happened to have a '97 Suburban in the shop that they were dismantling for parts. CfC vehicle. Immaculate interior. Excellent exterior for its age. Other than the fact that it was a C1500 5.7L gasser I'd have loved to have owned something that looked like that.

Absolutely stupid, IMO. A shame, really. "Slaughtered"? Didn't look like it to me. It didn't run any worse at the end, than it did to start with. Looked/sounded like it had a blown head gasket before they started it (and it did start, which is a testament to the engine alone). Poor guy behind the wheel. He'll probably die of some undisclosed cancer, now.
With all the crap that poor old girl poured into the air they could have sold the thing to some one who would have fixed it and saved everyone the pain.
CFC is just another POS from the "O" administration.
I walked down "federal row" over at the local chevy dealer. It was enough to make you weep.
Nice rigs, most of them. A few junkers that belonged in the bone heap but mostly great rigs.
One powerstroke Pickup, maybe 96 or 97 vintage. Lovely truck too.
I do believe we will look back on this mess as a real stupid time in our history.
I would like to personally give the idiot politicians an enema with that stuff they poured into that poor six and half.
Maybe that would tighten their situation a bit. :D

The other thing is that I can now really see how much this program is helping to lessen emissions and make our air cleaner...

That about makes me want to cry. Here I am looking for a truck about like that and they are blowing them. Some the big "O" sure did deserve that Peace Prize .
Maybe he deserves to have it where the sun dont shine!!!

They'd woulda had better luck dropping the drain plug and running it instead dumping in that stuff.
So much for reduced emissions....LOL where is Al Gore when ya need him
Poor dude running the truck will die of cancer b4 the truck will give it up.
What a waste.......
Probably had a crack free block, too.
Here's another diesel Suburban dying a painful death. This one did not last so long on the toxic brew. Luckily, many of the older 6.2's did not quality because their fuel economy was over the 18 mpg threshold. I get close to 30 mpg freeway with my 82 Suburban with a severly worn out engine.

watched the first posted link, and then followed a few others. some beautiful vehicles getting destroyed there. why weren't they taken and given to families that could never afford a new "gas saver" but need a decent vehicle. the brain dead liberal citizens of my country are now echoing that we need to do the same thing. what a bunch of retards. on both sides of the border.
Here in Australia, we pay up to $25 grand to get a re-built 6.5 fitted up to a Japanese (underpowered) 4x4 like a Toyota Landcruiser or a Nissan Patrol.
The destruction of those engines makes me feel like puking on the keyboard......such a waste!!! The small amount of benefit (if any) that occurs by the destruction of these engines, is FAR outweighed by the the cost of producing more engines to replace them (even though they may be more fuel efficient engines)..... The world's leaders should concentrate their efforts on China and India etc....these are the countries that are belching out pollution at unbelievable quantities..... the amount of bad gas put out by a Chev 6.5 is nothing....
I'm totally disgusted!!!!

WTF is this??? Why do they purposely blow the engines?? For the junker car thing? Shouldn't the vehicles actually be junk?? What a joke look at all the coolant the poor ol' burb spewed onto the parking lot. And the smoke like WTF who are these idiots, sell these rigs to me I'll let them sit in the back forty for forty years before I do that to a good vehicle.

It's a government project. It isn't supposed to make sense. You aren't off base, IMO, with the "WTF?".
Have a look at This Thread (http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=35625). The smog saved versus the smog generated is on the same level.
hmmm looks kinda stupid to me to destroy a good truck like that. Not sure how that cash for clunkers programe works in the u.s. i'm from canada we have about the same stupid thing here all to help bail out some corporation

The ironic thing about the whole CFC program is that a significant number of the vehicles that were turned in were worth more than the $4500 allowance. The owners were just too stupid to realize it.

You are probably aware of this by now, but Edmunds.com did an analysis of the actual effectiveness of the C4C program, and found that, when you factor out the cars that would have been sold even without the program, the actual cost per vehicle that was purchased solely because of the program was about $24,000.

Also of interest is the toll that these sale are took on September sales, effectively robbing Peter to pay Paul.
I looked at that dying Suburban, which looks remarkably like mine, and nearly cried. All those parts and a perfectly serviceable vehicle that is irreplaceable.
You can get good tools and bad tools, but they are all tools in Washington D.C. right now...

Here I am looking for a good 6.5 engine. Just outrageous. Talk about a brilliant government program. Just scratch it up as more "change".

I'll bet the folks at at the "Good Will Garage", who referbish and distribute vehicles to the neady, are about ready to commit treason! We do our civic duty and go to the polls in good faith, just to put some waste-of-skin in a possition of power, and look at the result! Just one more example of how the country that we love is disappearing by leaps and bounds.
Glad my 95 Suburban 6.5 is secure in the barn back home.

I've read more than one article stating that due to the Cash For Clunkers program, we've probably seen the end of the $3-$5000 used car for a very long time. A much better idea, IMO (and as Dick Wells referred to) would have been to give a $4500 tax credit for donating a running, currently registered vehicle to a charity. I know more than a few people who are desperate for a good vehicle like many of those destroyed under CFC. Most of the dealership mechanics I know say the average "clunker" coming in is in good-to-excellent shape, and a lot say their own vehicles aren't that good. Only about 10% are truly clunkers.

Yep, the US Congress is full of arrogant idiots with stupid ideas like CFC. And unfortunately, they are also elected by some idiots.
The Germans have another idea. They simply raise the registration fees on older vehicles, gradually pushing 'some' owners to give them up to the salvage yards. This approach takes many truly unsafe clunkers off the streets. Makes alot more sense to me. You can either opt for big payments over many years, or just pay a higher registration fee. Which is better?
At least the Germans are not trashing a valuable resource without some justification.
Our country might find itself in a real war someday, kinda like WWII, and 6.2/6.5 diesels, regardless of age, might be one of the most valuable resources needed to keep the military's HUMVEEs in action.

More importantly, people who KNOW the 6.2l/6.5l diesels. So many problems that the humvees had while I was in could have been easily and inexpensively repaired if the mechanics had been GM diesel enthusiasts like on this site.
When a 6.2l enthusiast friend of mine deployed to Iraq with his Guard unit to take over a MP/convoy escort mission for a year, I gave him my TDP troubleshooting guide in the hope that his motor sergeant might be able to use it to help get things done more quickly. He (my friend) told me it got used quite a bit, and that several up-armored humvees with injector pump problems were kept in service temporarily by adding oil to the fuel tank and pouring lukewarm water over the pump during hot no-starts.

What a good idea you had for that DP manual! Bet that guy really appreciates what you did. Only God knows all the good that little action may have done.:)
Thanks.

I'm not sure Edmunds.com is even a credible source of info...or pricing. Wish they had the CFC in Canada, but apparently we don't need it since the majority of vehicles mfgd here are sold in USA, so the end result is a 6.5 melts on youtube and people mourn, while the North American Auto industry (at least for the time being) is given a breath of life...
OMG, now we're bailing out Canada!
;)
but seriously, all you Americans, think about it. First we use taxpayer money to "bail out" GM and Chrysler, just so we can replace the shareholders and bond holders with the UAW, then we use more taxpayer money to create an artificial market for the product.
No pain, no gain.
No penalty for failure, ...
