Hi all,

This is my first write to this great forum. Includes a lot of good information.

I bought a timing light with pulse adapter. My friend was using it with his Ford diesel. It had a DB2 pump also.

He was using following values to set-up his timing values:
low idle - 8.5 degrees
1400 rpm - 5.5 degrees (he was calling this point as most retarded point)
2000 rpm - 8.5 degrees

Are those same values valid for 6.2 diesel also ?

I didn't find any articles for timing issues. Is there any articles available ?

All the tips and advices are welcome.

First off

WELCOME TO TDP
The values you have will get you close.

Along with the numbers you have you can also use a Pyro in the exhaust to add value to the timing numbers.

Too retarded will see the temps climb, advance will see them fall.

To far advanced and it will rattle like a can of rocks.

At Idle the 5 degree mark is gonna be close.

Your engine may like 6 or 4 or ??? play with it to find the sweet spot.

The factory books only describe aligning the mark on the IP with the mark
on the cover.
There is also a tool and procedure to mark the cover.

This tool bolts into the housing and has a device that allows the timing gears (Chain) to be preloaded (#1 piston at TDC) and then a part of the tool is struck with a hammer to mark the housing with true TDC

This allows the IP to be indexed correctly. ????????????

I always check the marks and if there are none, mark the cover/ip before removal of the IP

A quick check is to see how well the engine starts when warm. A balky startup with some white smoke means you need to advance things a little.

Have fun and keep us posted
