My understanding is that the GMT400 body style ran basically from 1988 to 1999 - with some crossover years where certain models retained the body style longer than others at each end of the time span if you want to nitpick about things.

But I'm finding body parts listed for 1996-99 GM trucks. I know that at some point they changed the interior from the "squared off" style to the more rounded style. Do you think that would be why there is a difference in designation? To the best of my knowledge, the sheetmetal remained the same with some possible trim changes.

Typical, for GM and many other mfg's. This generally refers to sheet metal or chassis changes, usually major. 1982 and 2003 saw some sheet metal changes, but the GMT's remained the same. Interior and powertrain changes don't get the recognition of retooling.
