View Full Version : Slight Bue Smoke and Slight stumble

The 6.2 Diesel Jeep Project is moving along, but not as fast as I would like, need some motivation. But the closer I get the better.

I changed the injectors with some used ones. The old ones had alot of carbon around the nozzle end. It still has some blue smoke, but much better when warmed up than before. It no longer burns my eyes. There is also a slight stumble or miss when I accelerate hard.

Doing a search it appears to either be fuel delivery due to clogged filters, or bad timing. Also, it runs much quieter than my 6.5 K3500, which makes me think the timing is off, or the chain is worn, about 115k on the engine. It is a 1983 6.2. IP looks to have been rebuilt at sometime. Other than that it runs very smooth at idle and at high rpms unloaded. If changing the timing which way should I move the pump, toward the driver or passenger side, line thickness be enough? I do want to keep fuel economy.

Anything else I should/could look at?

Thanks

Advance the timing!

Move it about two line widths to start with, you can go as much as a 1/16".

See how it does, probably retarded timing.

Thanks, I'll try that, toward the driver side correct?

Blue haze can be timing, but I suspect that unless things have been fooled with that the injector POP pressure may be low due to wear.

The injectors on these are tough little critters but they are only good for about 100K miles before they start south.

I would have them checked.

The timing chain does stretch over time and this can cause a loss of timing advance and result in the smoke but usually its the injectors that are the issue when blue smoke comes calling.

OH BTW 6.2's do run a lot qieter than the 6.5's especially the electronic injected ones.
All together different sound. But very pleasant for sure.

Let us know

Yes, towards the driver's side, I left that out earilier and had meant to type that.

Moved the IP about 2 line widths, it is much better. Still a little smoke, but it is vastly improved, and no longer a mosquito killer. Still seems to stumble/miss a little, but I have not driven it far enough.

Current injectors have about 52,000 miles or less. They came off a van with replaced heads. If the injectors were replaced at the same time as the head(s) then they should have less than 1,000 miles. If I really want to make it better I could change the timing chain, but this Jeep project was to be a budget build or on the cheap.

Thanks for the help.

The only way to know for sure whats up with the injectors is to have them pop tested.

A real sloppy timing chain will certainly effect things.

Generally a chain only is all you need to make things good again. Rarely do the sprockets wear on these engines.

Having the cam timing all sweet will help a bunch.

I would get the injectors pop tested to see whats up.
