From a comment in another post:

Just picked up a set of 285/75R16s on 2002 rims today. Hopefully they'll give a bit more clearance for me! :D

Cleared some time out and got the new shoes on mine today and then took it for a spin. Wish I had done that a long time ago!

For whatever reason, the previous owner had 225/70R16s on it - basically 28.5" x 9" tires. The 285/75R16s are basically 11.5" x 32.75" tires. The difference is pretty substantial. The smaller, narrower tires found every rut in the road and wanted to follow them, got swallowed by potholes, and the short sidewall made for a very hard ride. The larger tire doesn't track into the ruts, gives a lot more sidewall cushion, and isn't nearly as jarring hitting potholes and such.

Also, the old tires were BFG ATs and the new ones are BFG MTs. I wasn't sure how much road noise I'd pick up with a Mud Terrain, but it isn't bad. A bit more hum than the ATs, but nothing objectionable.

Have to take a couple pictures and post them up.

I do have to trim the centers a bit so that they fit the rim.

Now I just have to do something about the peeling paint!

Wow, that is a big difference. I just put 285s on my Sub, up from 245s That was even a big difference. I did need to crank up the torsion bar a bit and cut a bit from the back, inner part of the flare. Good to go.

Might want to trim a little from the lower rear corners of the front bumper if it's like my 94.

Having the plow on the front helps there - the front bumper is pushed forward enough that it isn't a problem. And after a couple hundred miles I see no signs of rubbing at the back of the wheelwells either.

You have a gasser's bumper, too! I like the diesel bumper myself... sets 'em apart a lil' bit.

Yep, I've always wondered about that. Was the bumper and plow all swapped together from a gasser? Was the diesel bumper damaged and replaced with the gasser bumper? Guess I'll never know...
