Propane works well if it has a turbo (or other method of stuffing more O2 in the cylinder). Otherwise, propane just takes up space. The N/A engines use all the O2 available as it is (any time you see black smoke), so adding more fuel displaces volume best used for O2. At best, you'll be trading one fuel for another, and propane has significantly less heat energy than oil (read: less power/economy).

Propane gas is a fuel and to a lesser degree a catalyst that promotes a more complete combustion. In general, if your engine has an excess of air, adding propane can increase power. On the other hand, if you can turn up the fuel metering in the injection pump to take advantage of all of the available air, propane won't help much.

Secondarily, propane can be used as a partial diesel fuel substitute, and the engine can run more or less normally on a fuel use ratio of 25% diesel fuel and 75% propane. Using propane this way can be beneficial if there's a cost differential between the two fuels that favors propane.

The reality of the situation is that when factoring in fuel costs, safe propane injection kit costs, lost space to a DOT tank and of course the safety issues, most diesel owners move in some other direction that either adds power or helps them save on fuel costs.
