Blowing batteries

I have a 83 Chevy military rescue vechicle 6.2, 24 volt system. I need to learn how to check the charging system because it is over charging batteries. It has two alt. and I don't know anything about this type system. Can anyone help please. I am not a mech. as you can tell so take it easy on the tech. terms please.

Charge controller is what cuts off charge to the battery.

honestly you would be better off to convert it to 12V IMO it makes it alot easier to work on or add accessories to it (lights snow plow etc)

I would disagree with that. The 24v part of the system is there for only 2 reasons. Compatibility with military trailers which all use 24v lighting and electronic equipment that uses more than 12 volts (radios, etc).

Other than that, the vehicle is basically 12 volt.

right but in the real world use of them the 24V system is there for one thing starting the engine.. its a 12V system that was hacked and pieced together to work in 24V for the military.. remove one alternator,replace starter,remove resistor pack for glow plugs and wire batteries in parallel and you will have a dependable 12V vehicle... takes about 30 mins to convert it other than the starter and you can sell a used working 24V starter for what you pay for a brand new 12V one

I would disagree with that also.

He could easily hook up a 10kw power inverter and use the truck as a generator during an emergency.
