4" vertical exhaust

Last summer, I asked what people thought of a vertical exhaust but nobody seemed to be in favor of it.

Well I decided to do it anyhow. I think it sounds great although it is a little louder than I expected. I would not recommend doing it on a brand new duramax but on my old beater I think it is kind of cool.

I took a picture of it and I also have a short video with sound, of me reving it up. I can't seem to be able to upload the video to the net but I can e-mail it anybody that wants to hear it.

One legit question Why not closer to the edge of the cab and about 10inches higher? It probably would be a little quieter in the cab.

I couldn't get the pipe any closer to the edge of the bed without going on the outside of the frame. This would make it much more complicated to hook up and would limit the ground clearance somewhat because the pipe would have to pass under the frame. I have 4" running clear up to the down pipe. The only other way to get it closer to the edge is to use two 90* elbows inside the bed, one to shoot it over to the right and the other to bring it back vertical. I might do this but it will cost me another $40.00

As far as the hight goes, I planned on it being a little higher but by the time I slid it down far enough to put the 90* elbow on the bottom, this was all I had left. I used a 4' long stack.

By the way you guys have to hear how this thing sounds. Somebody please let me e-mail the video to you.

Yes you are right. The two 90s will bring the height up. You are also correct about muffler, I don't have one.

My wife is a little bent out of shape for getting the exhaust but as soon that passes, I probably will get two more 90s and move the pipe.

sounds COOL enough that i forwarded it to a couple of guys! :D I still think it looks a little goofy ;) But like I said it's not my truck! Tell your wife about the FANTASTIC increase in gas mileage! Must be at least 10+MPG! :D

Actually the truck sounds even better in person. The digital camera that I used doesn't pick up the sound very well.

I drove it for the first time today, with the new exhaust and it seems to have a little more power. What I really noticed is that the turbo spools up faster than before. By the time I hit 1600 rpm I have 15 psi of boost, before it didn't get to 15 psi until around 1800 rpm.

Two 45's would flow better that two 90's.

Hopefully they would get it to the edge of the bed before it clears the rail.

I never thought of using 45s. Actually I didn't know that they made them. They probably will work better because 2 90s are too long and would have to be cut down a little to get them in there.

Show your wife the prices of replacing whole exhaust.Make sure you get an OEM price.Big truck parts houses carry all those exhaust pieces.

I agree that a whole exhaust would have been more expensive. I had about $100.00 in this system.

My wife says the problem is that there wasn't anything wrong with old system. I told her the stock exhaust is too small but she said that I am just going through my second childhood.

Well I finally got around to moving my exhaust over. I used 2 45* elbows inside the bed. I had to cut one a little so that it would not stick up above the bed side. Other than that it worked well. It cost me another $37.00 for the elbows but it actually cost me more because I had to let the wife go get her hair done. Oh well.

Now I think it is a little too high. what do you guys think?

New setup looks sharp! Height is even better. Do you have any closeups of the 45s at the bottom where the "stack" comes through the bed?

Sorry,I did not take any pictures before I put in the tool box. I can take a picture under the tool box but you will only be able to see the bottom elbow. Let me know if want the picture and I will run out and take it.
