View Full Version : New Injector Policy????
I have a stock 02 Crew Cab Dually which developed a bad oil leak approx. two weeks ago. When I looked for the cause of the leak, I found that it was coming from the overflow tube of the engine. Pulled the dipstick and found I had diesel fuel in the oil. Injectors. Knowing about the 7yrs 200,000 mile warranty I found that my warranty ended on 1/26 of this year. I was looking at a 3500-4000.00 bill coming up. Some of the members from this site suggested I speak to my local dealers and see if they might be willing to work with me on the repair because they have a lot of discreation in these matters. I didnt have a lot of hope after the first dealer told me flat out No. I tried a second dealer that was about 1/2 hour away from me and the long and short of it is they changed all the injectors, oil and filter, fuel filter and my total bill came out to a touch over $250.00. Not sure how they did it, but the service writer smiled and told me the warranty was 10yr - 200,000 miles. Has anyone heard of this?

WOW! I will have to ask my Service Manager about that one. Where is this dealer at? We do alot of DMAX work and have had to not cover some vehicles under the special policy because of the 7 YEAR 200,000 mile rule. I'm sure that the person who files their warranty claims will come across that one and will be wanting the money from the service writer.
Duramaster: I dont want to get anyone in trouble so all that I will say is that the place is in orange county. The service writer told me 10yrs , 200,000. Wouldnt his manager or boss see the mistake , Im assuming its a mistake, before they do the work on the truck ? Dont the have to have some type of ok from the factory? Whatever the case , Im so happy that they saved me a nice chunck of change.

Hey Guys,
Looking for advice. I have a stock 03 Sierra Dmax. Started having some detonation sounds at hot restarts, local garage checked balance rates on Tech II, met spec. Now when I get on it I blow a huge plume of black smoke, sometimes have smoke at idle after descending steep logging roads (idling basically) for a few minutes, clears up at highway speeds (appears to at least). My truck was put into service 2/1/03 so I'm still under the 7 year warranty. Truck has 110k miles on it. Service history shows all 8 injectors were replaced by GM at 35k miles. I have added CAT filter in front of stock filter and tried both Primrose and Stanadyne Lubricity to unstick what I believe to be a sticking injector. Fear driving it and having engine blow from overfueling like what happened to Redbird. Should I try taking it into a dealer for warranty work?

It wouldn't hurt to call your dealer. From what you are describing, it sounds like the injectors have failed. As far as the balance rates go, your technician needs to do more than just "CHECK THE BALANCE RATES". Your technician has the ability to manipulate the fuel pressure which in turn can change the balance rates of the engine. I do this all the time. The engine might balance ok at idle fuel pressures, but it should also stay within spec when the fuel pressure is ramped to 160 mpa and anywhere in between.

Its at the dealer right now. Changed fuel filter with dealer part prior to taking it in to see if it affected anything and just to be safe, no change. If the balance rates are off but the only symptom is massive smoke and detonation but no check engine light and no fuel in the oil what do you think they will do?

They probably will not replace the injectors under the 04039A policy. It does not cover smoke. It covers certain DTC's, low power, fuel in the oil, hard start. There are a couple more that escape me right now.

Duramaster,
You were right. They say that the #7 injector is the culprit but the balance rates do not exceed the threshold for replacement. Any suggestions as to what I should do? I don't want to pay $4k to replace the injectors but also don't want to grenade the #7 cylinder either. What do you think about Rinkers Sea Foam suggestion for unsticking injectors?

It wouldn't hurt to try the sea foam or Stanadyne additive. I have added a whole bottle of Stanadyne to the filter and two bottles in the tank for fuel pressure sensor issues on the new LMM's. We don't call it "Mechanic In A Can" for nothing! :p

Why not just replace the one, if you don't want to pay for a whole set?? I can get you a new replacement shipped to you for about $300 + a $150 core.

madmatt,
Duramaster thinks if I do one it will just lead to the others failing. I looked injectors up on GMPartsdirect.com and they list for $200 a piece or am I looking at the wrong thing? The injectors in the truck were done at 35k under warranty on 4/5/2005 have there been any updates or revised models of injectors since then or are these the latest and greatest available to the dealers?
Question: the dealer says the injector held at 150 mpa during the test so no replacement under warranty, what if the oil had had fuel in it? Would it meet a warranty replacement then?

Did the dealer ramp the pressure to 160 mpa? Here is a line out of the bulletin.....................
Important: If the technician commands the fuel rail pressure with Tech 2® to 160 MPa at idle and it reaches at least 158 MPa, then this bulletin does not apply. The technician should then follow normal SI diagnostics. If the rail pressure does not reach 158 MPa, snapshot the data, then follow the diagnostics in this bulletin.
Did they do that?

According to the service writer they ramped it up and it held at 160 and never dipped below the specified level.
Just got back from a trip across the state and burned a whole tank of fuel with two bottles of Stanadyne in it no change. Seems like the fuel builds up in the system. If you run it hard the smoking will subside but if I drive the truck normally then get on it it smokes again doesn't seem as bad as before but is pretty evident and doesn't seem normal.

There is a local diesel specialty shop http://www.pensacoladiesel.com/ that offers reman injectors for $149 and if I read it right no up front $75 core charge. All work is done on site. Never had reason to use them because my 02 hasn't had problems yet. They claim to be technically on top of things maybe you can probe them on their process. I know they have been at that location for over ten years.
I've not used a stock reman yet But thats a good price and I wouldn't be a bit scared to use one. As far as just replacing one,,, of course it's not as good as replacing the whole set but if money is a factor why not just do one. I've not seen that replacing one makes the others go out any quicker.

When I enter the GM p/n 97729095 into gmpartsdirect.com or partszoneonline.com both say the part is reman. The local Chevy dealer also used that part number to give me a quote for injector replacement and the parts guys says that GM specs that part number. On websites where I've seennew and reman together new ones were $600 a piece and remans were around $200 a piece.
Wondering how often mechanics have seen any injector issues after they have done replacements with these remans (part number) if at all.?????

I have repalced lots of injectors and all using the GM P/N. Yes they are BOSCH reman injectors. I don't know what they replace in the injector to remanufacture them. They have always been remanufactured injectors. That is why there is such a high core value on them. If I oredered an injector for an LLY/ LBZ/ LMM it would still be the same story................ BOSCH remanufactured injector. As far as the aftermarket goes..... What kind of warranty do you get. The GM part is 12/12

Going back to the original post of this thread................. I just had a truck in the shop with California Emissions. He had a P0380 G/P code. There is a special policy on the glow plugs covering the glow plugs for 10 years/ 200,000 miles. It is a replace as failed policy, so the only glow plugs that are replaced are the defective ones and only as needed up to the 10 year/ 200k. Special policy 07057.
Subject: 07057 -- SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT - ENGINE GLOW PLUG
Models: 2002-04 Chevrolet Silverado
2002-04 GMC Sierra
Equipped with 6.6L Diesel V8 (RPO LB7 - VIN 1) Engine; and California Emissions (YF5/NE1), or Clean Fuel Emissions (VCL)

Condition
Some customers of 2002-04 model year Chevrolet Silverado; and GMC Sierra trucks, equipped with a 6.6L diesel V8 (LB7) engine, and California emissions (YF5/NE1), or Clean Fuel Fleet emissions (VCL), may experience a condition where the engine glow plugs may fail. Failure of the glow plugs on these vehicles will cause illumination of the MIL. Also, depending on the ambient cold start conditions and the number of glow plugs failing open, some customers may also comment about hard starting, misfiring and white smoking after cold start.
Special Coverage Adjustment
This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 200,000 miles (320,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to replace failed glow plug(s). The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.
For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after February 13, 2008 are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to February 13, 2008 must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.

Duramaster, thanks for all that you bring to the forum. You are always a step up with good info for a lot of folks here.
I have 3945 miles on my 2007 LBZ and it still runs very well.

Duramaster,
Thanks for the info. Figures I just finished replacing 7 of my glowpugs of course one fails then the another a few months later, my favorite is the forward one on the passengers side behind the IC tube.
As to injectors I'm leaning toward buying the ones from GM ($1,600) and having a local shop do the install ($1,100). The only warranty the shop will give me will be for workmanship on their behalf. Which means if an injector fails I'm out the labor I guess because it sounds as if GM warranties the injector itself for 12 months/ 12k miles. No chance GM will cover labor if the part fails?
