I have a 2005 LLY and just got word that the EGR cooler has decided to crap out and go south. So, it needs replacing. Anyone have a suggestion on replacing the cooler (i.e. pricing? do it yourself?, let the dealer deal with it?, etc) Dealer wanted $1,000 to repair/replace......

How many miles? You have an extended warranty for emissions system components.

The EGR cooler isn't that bad of a job if you have the tools for it. The important thing is to fill the cooling system using a VAC-N-FILL to prevent air bubbles in the EGR cooler. Air in the cooler can lead to perforation of the cooler (coolant leaks).
