Excessive black smoke, no turbo

Driving along and notice im billowing black smoke, cant hear the turbo. It spins by hand ok, spins after shutting engine off for a few seconds, and you can hear a rattling/slight knocking sound, assuming is the vacuum pump? or am i barking up the wrong tree. Thanks

My '94 did the same thing. I got rid of the vac pump and got a turbomaster and a '93 belt.

The TM is a spring device that replaces the wastegate actuator.
The TM can be set via a nut on its rod assembly so the wastegate blows open at a set boost level.

I would recommend useing a Heath chip with the TM. These chips have the programing changed so the thing wont defuel when the boost goes over the amount the ECM thinks it wants.

Without the Chip getting the boost just right can be a bitch.
If the boost goes too high the ECM will get cranky, set codes and can defuel to limp mode.

I have the TM chip combo and its great.

Set your boost at around 10 PSI max (should have freeflowing exhaust of 3-1/2 inch or so)
AN MIA CAT helps too.

The issue is your vacuum pump is probably gone gunysack.

If you want to fix the system as is, check the vacuum at the pump, should be steady at 26" HG if OK at the pump make sure the line set is leak free from pump to solenoid on LH VC and then to the actuator.

The actuator should see about 20"hg with engine at idle.

The vacuum pump is easy to R&R and the hoses/lines are easy to get to also.

Thanks for your help everyone.. put a new vac pump on and we had power!! it pulls 20" at the pump and fluctuates between 10-20" pretty quickly at the actuator
