View Full Version : EGT's dropping

Last year I turned up the mechanical IP. On a flat run 0 - 80 mph EGT's were about 1125*F. Did a country ride today and hit 1050*F. Truck seems a little less responsive, also starts harder after sitting 10 - 20 mins. Just wondering if the IP was heading for the toilet bowl. 200,000 miles on original equipment. Lift pump is working.
Any thoughts / advise?

All original? I'd say so.
Injectors last about 100K then deterioration is appreciable. Timing chain too about 100K miles.

IP 150-200K don't know about that I'd say that's reasonable life.

They'll run longer but performance declines.

Freshen up the injection and it would probably almost feel like a new 6.5.

Well Dave, maybe I will put those 36's back on if your truck is feeling poorly. Might have a change then. :D

I think 200,000 is pretty good for that DB2. My egt's are now where near that high. Was that holding at 80 or WOT to 80?

Dave,

Did you do only one run last year and only one run this year? What were outside temps like? If you only did one or two runs last year and the same this year, testing like that isn't reliable enough to say anything about the difference you saw. If you saw a big difference, then yes.

0 - 80 runs was WOT. I only did this once last year & once this year. I'm going truck hunting today so hopefully I can give the old girl some downtime to take care of issues. Anybody out there got a good DB2 you want to sell? 6.5 DD - cheque's in the mail. (like you have'nt heard that one before)

Definately

200K is just about the end of the road for these little critters.

Here is how it sort of works

Fuel is power and more power is more heat.

As the timing chain wears the timing retards and with this the EGT will climb some.

Advancing the timing to the point at which EGT just starts to fall off some is the limits on timing.

Your pump is starting to lose it's abilty to deliver fuel and getting the $$$ together for a rebuild would be in order.

The hard start after 10-20 is a key indicator.

Try adding a couple quarts of 30w motor oil to a tank of fuel.
If the hot starts get somewhat better then it confirms that the plungers in the IP are worn and the pressures are dropping off.

The fuel gets thinner and the clearances get greater so the ability of the IP to make POP pressure is taxed to a greater degree at cranking speed.

Change the IP and the squirts and your little creature will find new life with more power and better MPG.

Best

Missy

2 yrs ago when I pulled my 5th wheel in the heat it would not start at all in the 10 - 40 range. Had to wait for glow plug light to cycle. I turned the IP up last year and it worked. Life was good for the old girl. Did a lot of towing. But more wear & tear on the IP and history is starting to repeat itself. Best price I have so far is $1250 for pump($750 if it has new style head & plungers) and 450 for injectors. That's $1700 + GST (gouge and screw tax) OUCH! Need new timing chain. I have only found it in a kit with gears.(Still looking) Hope to find better prices.

Dave where are you looking? That's is stupid $$$. E-bay would give you some cheaper options for sure. I know my dad got a DS-4 from a not so reputable dealer, (don't get me started!) shipped up here to Canada for around $800. I am pretty sure the DB-2's were close in price. I have an extra DB-2, but it is going to be heading in for a rebuild and some 'modifications' :D

PM Busted on here. He's from Stony Plain, might have some ideas as where to find some better prices.

$1250 is a local rebuild - $1409 is DSG's price. Only 2 prices I have so far. Got another 6.5 truck Saturday so the pressure is off till towing season revs up.

Got a 98 GMC Sierra SB EC 4X4. New IP, PMD, Vac pump & Alt compliments of the dealer. Stock truck with 3:73 posi. Like 99% of the trucks in Alberta the windshield looks like a road map of Canada. Found a guy on Ebay selling IP's for around $365.00 + $125.00 core charge 1 yr warranty. 100% positive feed back. Hope he's the real deal.

LOL, my year in AB added to my "roadmap".
So, are you leaving the 98 alone for now?
I had found a guy on e-bay as well, selling IP's for around $300 canadian. But they were used and I don't know about the warranty.
