so i went to put my camper on the truck and when i plugged it in everything worked fine...

then the next night i had no tail/marker lights on the camper.

the truck lights were still on.

i looked and looked for an aux trailer light fuse and found nothing.

i even pulled all the fuses i thought may have a chance at being the culprit.

finally decided that since the BRAKE lights still worked that i'd just pull the plug and check that.

so i check the voltage with the truck off and i have about 11.5 at the tail light wire on the truck side.

then i take apart the camper side so i can get to the back whilst its plugged in.

i plug it in and i get a big 0 for voltage.

un plug it. 11.5

plug it in 0

so then i test the continuity between both sides of the camper plug, just trying to eliminate all possibilities.

works fine.

its getting late and i'm getting frustrated so i cut the tail light wire on the truck side and on the camper side and used a butt connector.

nothing.

so i drive home with my 4-ways on.

the next morning i'm fiddling around with it and when i test the tail light wire, sometimes i get 4 volts, sometimes 7, sometimes 11. while all the others have 12.5

all of the running lights work on the truck perfectly.

its only for the trailer plug.

to get around it i just ran a new wire to the tail light terminal and up to my switch in the cab i used to use for the LP.

can anyone explain why the truck lights work fine but i have variable LOW voltage for the trailer plug?

You have a corroded wire connection where the camper plug harness ties into the vehicle wire harness, that is why your reading voltage with no load then losing it when hooking up the lights.
Trace back the wiring from the camper plug under the vehicle.
Did your truck come with trailer pkg or camper pkg? If not then someone may have used scotchlocs to wire in the camper plug to the vehicle wire harness.
