I have a 05 duramax. Can a Mass Air Flow sensor cause loss of power to the point that I cannot get above 40 mph and the engine sounds like a mack truck engine? I can turn the engine off and start it back up and everthings fine for about 4 or 5 miles then it just looses power again.

Sounds more like a fuel delivery issue, likely the filter.
The MAF, when failed, will reduce fueling, but shouldn't cause a lot of unusual noise or power reduction to that level. A failed, or out of spec, MAF will cause the SES to show, and a DTC (P0101, and possibly others).

Yeah sounds like fuel filter or tank pickup is plugged.

a scanner connected while driving would be your best tool in the box!
