View Full Version : Questions about coolant.....

#1 I was told that the Dex needs changed at 100K? I have always done this about every 30k.

#2 I'm going to have the dealership do my change out as I'm not going to be freezing in the driveway with coolant all over me. Would it be smart to replace the thermostats now? There are 2 correct? Anyone have any idea what extra this might cost? Truck has just at 100k on her and running strong.

#3 A guy I know uses some Amsoil coolant that he swears is better than Dex. Any opinions? My thinking is to leave well enough alone....

Thanks For the help! Shed

use Dexcool, change at 100k and don't worry about the t-stats untill they give you problems or are in the front of the engine for something else.

I believe it is 5/150 so I'd definitely do it and Dex Cool has worked SO well in the diesels I would not switch.

Dexcool is manufactured by Havoline. I've haven't been to their web site for a while, but they originally stated that Dex was a "lifetime" coolant, which didn't need to be replaced on any set schedule. Havoline had tested it for up to 250,000 miles, but GM chose a more conservative service interval of 5 years or 150,000 miles.

I wouldn't let it go past 5 years, after that I know of many GM engines have been having intake manifold gasket failures that have been blamed on it

The DEXCOOL has nothing to do with the intake failures you mention. But that's another story for another day on a whole different forum. ;)

Yeah, aren't they mixing EGR and plastic? No way that could have anything to do with it...

Never had a Dexcool problem in 14 years... (no V-6 engines in the same time period, either...)

Yeah HOT EGR in the PLASTIC 3.8L intake plenium was a disasterious idea.
