Hello Again!

I need to change the oil in the Burb this weekend.

I have the typical factory oil cooler line leaks...

This summer I plan on changing the lines and cooler with the kit mentioned in the members section.

After doing some reading here, I see the advantages of switching to synthetic oil.

I was thinking of switching this weekend.

Will synthetic oil leak worse than Dino oil?

Should I wait to switch till after I change the cooling lines?

Thanks!

You may want to wait for the cooler line replacement. Most likely you'll be replacing the oil cooler as well, for fitting compatibility. The oil cooler and lines normally trap oil that doesn't get changed, so you'll make a clean conversion to synthetic if you do it all at the same time. I know, you really are splitting hairs at this point.

My experience also tells me that the synthetic may leak worse. I had a set of original lines survive to 107k miles. I switched to synthetic after replacing rod/main bearings in-frame. The lines immediately started to leak. Actually, it takes a couple weeks for the oil to make it to your garage floor. But I was keeping an eye on things following the magnitude of work just completed; bearing, cooling kit, etc.

Whatever you do, don't waste your time with factory aluminum tubes/crimps.

Best of luck!

Paul

Thanks Paul,

Appreciate the input. Makes sense... I was thinking about greater leakage... the thought did not cross my mind about the old oil trapped in the cooler!

Yep... Gonna change the cooler too. There is a kit from Lubrication Specialists (?).

I see your rig has 290,000! I hope to keep mine going for that long! I wish they made these things easier to work on! I would'nt mind wrenching on them so much, but you can't get a wrench on anything!

What was the most major work you've had to do on your rig?

Thanks again,
