View Full Version : Glow Plugs - 11G's or 60G's
Well, after being a "lurker" for so many years, I finally picked up my first 6.2L truck about a week ago. It's an '83 K2500 with a J-code 6.2L and an SM465 and the truck has about 64,000 original miles on it. It has the original 9G glow plugs in it and I was wondering if swapping these out to the newer 11G or 60G glow plugs should be one of my first things on the "to do" list. Also, there is a local AC Delco dealer here in town and they have both 11G's and 60G's on the shelf. Do the 11G's have the swelling issues that the 9G's have and should I just skip the 11G's and go straight for the 60G's? Thanks a lot.
The 60G plugs are the best choice for all around performance and safety.

The 11G's are good plugs, and won't swell like the 9G's (thermistor protected). They won't last as long as the 60G's, but heat much quicker, and are hotter (makes for quicker starts when it's really cold). As Robyn said, 60G's are the pick of the litter, but will usually require a longer glow cycle. If you can get a better deal on the 11G's, there's no reason not to. They will last a long time with an otherwise healthy engine and glow plug system.
Thanks for the info DmaxMaverick. Since this store has had the 11G's sitting on the shelf for a while and would have to order the 60G's, I might be able to get a better deal on them. If I can, maybe I'll give them a shot. I was just concerned that they might swell like the 9G's, but since they won't, they should be fine.

For the most part, with the stock controller, the 11g's work pretty well. I've got two sets deployed without any failures.
If you modify a controller for longer glow, they'll fail though, but won't swell.
