Well finally got myself a new truck to replace the 92 gasser. A 98 Burb that must have been the top of the line when it was released, I mean its got heated seats
This is going to do triple duty, family vacations, tow the Rover to events, and for SWMBO to drive the kids on snowy days.
That last one is of course the kicker, it needs to be reliable when I am not around. i think we got a good one. Its got 200k on the clock, but is a very strong runner, front end is tight, great brakes. Has some new parts under the hood, and its not leaking anywhere (yes I checked to make side all the fluids were topped up).

So lets start with some basic interior questions.

Niether door lock switch activate any of the door locks. I can hear a clicks and the individual door switches move just a little. Its a lift gate rear, not a barn door.
Is there a diagnostic check list to figure out the problem or do I just buy all new door locks and both switches?
Should the door switches also unlock the tail gate?
Is there a 'central' control box?

Would this have orginally had key fob lock remotes?
If so can they still be found?
Dealer only?

Wheres a good place to buy new switches?
The door mirror control is missing the knob to select driver/passenger.

The over head console and center console (bucket frt seats) are pretty beat up. Broken latches and stuff. The floor console has nothing electric that I can see, just a storage unit.
The overhead has the rear heater controls, garage door controller, lights, etc in it.
Short of going to the local wreckers what would be a good source for these?

Not on the immediate list of things to do, but within a year I will also replace the carpet, and recover the front buckets. The 60/40 2nd row and bench 3rd row are in pretty nice shape, but the leather on the fronts is cracked/tearing.

It also has an security system thats somewhat buggy. It kills power to the IP. The remotes are long lost, just has a dash switch. I need to pull the switch and start tracing wires.
The switch is mounted just below the rear wiper switch. I am guessing this is aftermarket, but could this be GM? Any way to tell?

I've had great luck with salvage yards. Do some searches on line. or check the great land of ebay. Definatley try to locate that mirror switch from a yard. I priced one at the stealer and it was like $70.00.

Regarding the door locks, it sounds like a problem I had on my 96. I could hear the clicking and see a little movement on the switch. When I removed the door panels I found that the rivets holding the locking mechanisms to the door had rusted out and the mechanism was just hanging there. Not being anchored to the door it had no way to move the lever or linkage far enough to do anything. I just drilled the remaining rusted rivets out and put in some new ones. works like a charm since then. the key fobs can be bought at a dealer or probably on ebay or something and programmed for your vehicle easy enough. When i bought one i believe it was about 80 bucks at the stealer.:)

Thanks.
Ebay does look promising for key fobs.

I will pull a door panel and take a look.
Does anyone know, is there a 'central' control module for the door locks or is that the all in the drivers side controls?

Located the door lock relay. Its just above the drivers right foot.
Has constant power from a 12 or 10g wire. Receives input from the door switches via a thin 16g wire. One wire for lock one for unlock. Sends power out to the door lock actuators via a hvy gauge wire. Tan is unlock and ??(forgot) is lock. My relay is working correctly.
Popped off the door panels. The actuators are receiving 12v power on the tan and ?? wires when they are supposed to.
None of the actuators are loose.
I even directly jumped the actuators and they don't work.
The actuator body is grounds via the door and I checked (I have a ground check light) and they are grounded.
Hard as it is for me to believe but it looks like all four actuators are bad.

The security system is aftermarket. Still tracing the wires.

Took the truck to a detailer and the interior is amazing. I am still shocked that they got all the oil and other stains out of the carpet. This was a ranch truck and while I would claim it was beat on I really thought I was going to have to replace the carpets. But they got them clean, door panels all look good.

You can check the RPO codes on your truck and ensure it has the keyless entry option, however, with the options you listed it is highly likely it did / does. I got extra remotes for mine from e-bay with programming info (very easy). Also center consoles from the stealer are $300+ for a plastic storage bin. You can either get on on e-bay that is factory or go with an aftermarket unit such as one from Tuffy Security Products (http://www.tuffyproducts.com/p-89-017-deluxe-stereo-security-console-12-12-wide.aspx) for the same price. For switches check LMC Truck most of what they sell is basically the same as the stealer for less $, or you can try www.gmpartsdirect.com the stealer parts at almost wholesale prices. The Suburbans are very nice trucks and with the 6.5 excellent fuel mileage, we use ours to tow as well as the primary family hauler.

Thanks for the reply.
I have tuffy stuff in the rover and love it.
I have been watching ebay for items and I am really starting to think I might be able to use a center console from an 03 body style. It looks longer. I like the idea of it fitting up tighter to the dash. Right now that space is is just wasted.

I need to go to the local wreckers and see if they will let me just look around with a tape measure in hand. basically either looking for two seperate units, or one that is longer.

Tossing around the idea of getting a remote start. The ones I am looking at include the door lock overide. So holding off on new FOBs until I decide on that.
