View Full Version : Considering TCI Transmission Controller.
I do not like how the truck runs at 40 - 60 mph with
my truck camper ( 3k Wt). Shifts to much and TCC is always unlocking. Was reading about
the TCI tranny controller, You remove the PCM from the trans and plug in the TCI trans controller. It does all the functions
that the PCM does, but is programable. Can set shift points and TCC lock up speeds . Also set TCC lock up in 2nd...... The TCI rep says it should work ok as PCM no longer knows TRANS is there. ?
Says it will not affect engine operation....
Anyone know if this has been done before, would like to be sure before I envest 800.00 $

Are you looking to do more than this?
: Cheap way to get the TCC to lock in 2nd..

I've thought about this alot, because I want to transpant a 4L80E in place of my old 700. However I think you might encounter a problem with the ECU throwing codes from the transmission outputs not being plugged in. Not sure how to fool the computer other than you'd need a resistor to plug back in and show the computer that the trans is doing something.
Tryed the resistor trick, works ok. except
4th gear will not lock up tcc untill 50 nph, Does lower tcc lockup 3rd to 40mph and 2nd to 30 mph, at least on my 96... Also hrd shifts....
If anyone interested the TCI home page is tciauto.com ( if i rember right. )

I am not real familiar with OBD II trucks, but I can see some problems. First, if the engine controls all work (and the only way to know is to try it or find someone who has the same setup or you could switch to a DB2)the SES light will stay on. Without the transmission sensors, it will set codes like crazy. You will probably have to splice several sensors back into the PCM for the speed sensor, 4X4 control, ABS, etc. Second, you will need another throttle position sensor as the APP probably won't work and an engine speed sensor. Neither of these are insurmountable, but will have to be addressed. Third, there is nothing this computer will do that yours can't be made to do. A competent chip programmer should be able to reprogram the transmission side (engine side too, if you want) of your PCM to provide you what you want. Have you checked with JK? If he can't, maybe try Westers. (http://westers_garage.eidnet.org/) Forth, there are 4L80E stand alone computers (TCMs) you could get from a salvage yard for around $100 that could be reprogrammed. They will require the TPS & ESS sensors and you would have to rewire your harness. But the price would be much less.
Check with John Kennedy and\or Bill Heath - I would think that a reflash to '99 specs on your PCM, with corrected trans shifting and lockup parameters at around $600 exchange would be the best way to go.
More power, more control, less money.
Have you looked into that option?
