View Full Version : k2500 Suburban doing 33.5 mpg... is he dreaming
Check out the following ebay listing. The seller says he gets a milage of 7 litres per 100km which when translated is about 33.5 mpg(US Gallon). Oh and I have been reliably informed that the seller is adamant that is what he gets.
Hey I want that kinda milage too.... How do I get it?:(

Man, and to say I thought my 19.5mpg was good. If he really gets 33 in the sub, what mileage does the tow truck get?

Maybe if it's being towed by a Prius, downhill, with a tailwind. 25 MPG is almost believable. 33?.... I'd have to see it, in person. Then, I still wouldn't believe it.

Not just dreaming - he's flat out lying (or at the very least made a mistake in the listing). There is absolutely no way he's getting that mileage. Best I've ever got with my Burb is about 21.
i have sent this bloke a message, saying that gm are on there way to buy it back, strip it down and put the the parts in the new 4.5litre
I have never been one to care much about mileage when I'm in a hurry.
I used to own a '93 6.2L in a 2wd extended cab short box with 3.42 ring & pinion. It would make 28 and change like clock work smoking down the interstate at 80 mph. I have pondered many times what that rig might have done at 65'ish? I traded an '89 Beretta 2.8L 5 speed that made about the same mileage. Talk about a satisified used truck buyer!!
I have more recently test drove a '95 6.5L turbo 1500 4wd suburban with 3.42 ring & pinion. This is one of those 8-bolt (2500 looking) 1500's. The fella claimed 25 mpg was a piece of cake! He said that he never got less than 20, even when he pulled a small speed boat at excessive speeds (80+mph). I know the power of 3.42's. But my '95 4wd 1/2 ton pickup has never beat the 20 mpg mark. I really wonder what pre-combustion champers are in those 1500 8-bolt Suburbans?
I guess I'm not gonna call bullshirt on the 33 mpg thing just yet. One of these years, I'll get my "true" 1/2 ton 4wd Suburban running and I'll report in then. It will have the 3.73's with a Gear Vender and the fuel mizer pre-cups. I don't see 30+ mpg being out of reach at 65'ish. I suspect that this guy would have to find the slowest travel speed that he can, and still keep it locked up in overdrive.
Over and out!!

In my first 93 truck I did get almost 26 MPG at 55MPH with cruise set and on a long flat hwy. 3.73 gears.

From what I have seen and heard the Mechanical IP's got better mpg. I think the N/A setup was better on fuel as well.

Hi
Seeing he is down under,he might be refering to an imperial Gallon. It's a little more than US gallon.4.54 liters in a Imperial Gallon,3.78 liters in a US gallon. That could be the differance in good to great milage.

I thought that at first, too. But, his calculation is correct, and he stated US Gallon. 33.5 MPG = 7.02L/100Km.

I have an 86 6.2L powered K10 that I use as my off-roading truck. Prior to buying my Duramax tow rig, I used to drive the K10 to the trail head, sometimes hours away from home.
The truck had a 700r4 / NP208 t-case, is lifted 4" with 35x10.5x15" Super Swamper Boggers, and at the time still had 2.73 gears. On one particular trip I drove out to the trail head approx 185 miles from home, wheeled a good 15 miles, then drove another 60 miles with the transmission's bellhousing sheared clean off before it ran out of ATF. So, I put on approx 260 miles or so, and idled the engine the rest of the 2 hours home and only burned $30.00 worth of diesel at nearly 4 bucks a gallon. Thats approx 7.5 gallons of fuel, which means I got approx 30+ mpg with the truck.
BTW, the truck had the IP set for approx 700 ft of elevation, and the wheeling trip was done at 2500 ft of elevation, and smoked black like a freight train from 1500 ft up.
While my calculations are fairly rough, thats impressive mileage for an old truck on big boggers! The sheared transmission was a bit of a bother, got towed home by a 4 door jeep :(
I bought an 86 2500 Burb 4x4 back in the day. It had 50K on the clock when purchased.
It had the 6.2 N/A engine and would get 24 MPG hwy without any real coaxing.
With hard tires, careful driving and a few tricks, 30+ certainly could have been possible.
The TD 6.5 will not do it as far as I can see. The best I have seen with my 94 Burb is 21 Hwy
