I've got an '01 K2500 HD with ~146K. I lost all fwd/rev drive motion last year ('08) around late March- turned out to be the PRNDL switch on the trans. Now, some 9 months later, my SES light came on, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first. However, a couple of hours later when taking another trip, I've noticed the following:
* The tranny shifts somewhat harshly going into D from neutral;
* The truck seems to take off from a stop sluggisly- no "pep", as if there was slippage (may not be starting in 1st gear);
* Going through the different positions via the column shifter, the 3 and 2 positions will not light up on the PRNDL indiator, 1 and R light up, but I noted some intermittent display of the D position;
* I think I'm stuck in a 2nd gear- tranny never shifts after initially starting out from a stop. The tac revs up towards 2300 at ~40 mph and nevery shifts.
* The truck appears to shift into Rev OK;

I haven't taken the truck to the local dealership yet (late Sunday PM now), but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that I went through another PRNDL switch. I heard that there is a cover, a "skid plate" of sorts that can be bolted over the outside of the PRNDL switch. Anyone know of where one of these cover plates can be purchased?

Also, is it difficult to replace the PRNDL switch? I'd prefer to avoid another $600 bill like I bit into last year! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

The NSBU (PRNDL switch) it a $50 item at an Allison distributor, $150 at a dealer. It takes less than 30 minutes to replace in your driveway.

What you are seeing is "limp mode". You'll need to pull the DTC's (codes causing the SES lamp) to find out why. When in limp mode (that you are experiencing, there are other "modes"), the tranny only allows 3rd gear and reverse. Pull the codes for the reason. If you've been using a power adder, you may have "limped" the tranny. May also be fuel/cold or electrical related. Could be a number of other reasons, but we can't help without knowing the codes. When the NSBU fails, the PRNDL display will usually flash or disappear.

The "cover plate" you refer to, I think, is the updated NSBU with a protective cover to prevent failure due to snow/ice buildup.

There is a metal shield that covers the NSBU available from these sources. Pricey, if I recall correctly, though.

The transmission shield, P/N 700028, will protect the shift cable/manual shaft area from snow and ice build-up.

This shield is NOT available through GM and must be purchased from a distributor.

The dealership informs me that the problem I'm having is indeed related to the NSBU switch- apparently, the folks that installed my switch (and connectors) last year did an insufficient job at insulating the connector wires and consequently, they corroded. The dealership I'm now working with will redo the splices (and apply the dieleletric grease). For ~$200, I'll be back on the road (could have been a bunch worse- the cost of the switch at a Kokomo, Indiana dealership is $226!!!).

Thanks also for the info on the sources for the switch cover- I'll have to look into this.
