Two years ago I experienced the famous NSBU symptoms on my '01 2500HD, and my shop changed the Pressure Switch Manifold. PSM switch $90, fluids/supplies $30, diagnosis/labor $210...total $330.
Three months later I go in for brake work, and while it's there I have him do an oil change.
He also recommends a transmission filter be replaced, the internal one. The truck has 100k miles and I say do it.
A trouble-free year goes by and I again have NSBU-like symptons, and he swaps out the NSBU switch to the tune of $200 for the switch, $100 for the pigtail, and $100 for diagnosis/labor...total of $400! And...he says he HOPES this takes care of it, and if it does not it is probably the "computer module".
Well, you guessed it, six months later my transmission again locks out into nuetral, or limps along in 3rd gear. My son-in-law had it in Florida for a moving job, and it acted up for him on the way down. Two shops in FL, one an Allison shop and one a dealership, examined it and found no codes or trouble.
Restarting several times clears it up, but I am pretty frustrated, so I take it back to the shop which is where it is now.
My questions are;
What is the official name of the "computer module" he refers to (part #?), and what might it cost?
Will this finally take care of my problem? Is there ANYTHING else it might be? I hate not being able to trust the vehicle!
Should I ask him to give me some kind of break on parts mark-up, or diagnosis, or something? Or is this really that difficult a problem to properly identify?
He is a local small town transmission/service guy, and I do not think he is deliberately scamming me. He did my pin-hole leak transfer case replacement and, although it was expensive, he seems competent and knowledgeable. He says he has done many NSBU switches but has never seen the trouble I am having.
Thanks for any feedback you can offer. I am hoping to get the truck running right and sell it in the spring!
