Two years ago I experienced the famous NSBU symptoms on my '01 2500HD, and my shop changed the Pressure Switch Manifold. PSM switch $90, fluids/supplies $30, diagnosis/labor $210...total $330.

Three months later I go in for brake work, and while it's there I have him do an oil change.
He also recommends a transmission filter be replaced, the internal one. The truck has 100k miles and I say do it.

A trouble-free year goes by and I again have NSBU-like symptons, and he swaps out the NSBU switch to the tune of $200 for the switch, $100 for the pigtail, and $100 for diagnosis/labor...total of $400! And...he says he HOPES this takes care of it, and if it does not it is probably the "computer module".

Well, you guessed it, six months later my transmission again locks out into nuetral, or limps along in 3rd gear. My son-in-law had it in Florida for a moving job, and it acted up for him on the way down. Two shops in FL, one an Allison shop and one a dealership, examined it and found no codes or trouble.

Restarting several times clears it up, but I am pretty frustrated, so I take it back to the shop which is where it is now.
My questions are;

What is the official name of the "computer module" he refers to (part #?), and what might it cost?
Will this finally take care of my problem? Is there ANYTHING else it might be? I hate not being able to trust the vehicle!
Should I ask him to give me some kind of break on parts mark-up, or diagnosis, or something? Or is this really that difficult a problem to properly identify?

He is a local small town transmission/service guy, and I do not think he is deliberately scamming me. He did my pin-hole leak transfer case replacement and, although it was expensive, he seems competent and knowledgeable. He says he has done many NSBU switches but has never seen the trouble I am having.

Thanks for any feedback you can offer. I am hoping to get the truck running right and sell it in the spring!

Sorry, Tony. You have been, and are being, hosed (whether intentionally or not). None of the service you paid for was likely necessary (except perhaps normal maintenance). The internal tranny filter, according to Allison, should not need replacement, except during overhaul. Only the external spin-on filter should be replaced. And, PCM or TCM replacement may or may not help you now, are very expensive, and require a shop with a Tech II that is GM authorized to access the calibrations to program them.

There are several things that can cause the symptoms you have seen. What you've described so far does not indicate a transmission problem. With more detail, we can probably get you started in the right direction.

I've spent about $4,000 repairing this truck in the last three years. $1,500 of that was for the famous faulty New Venture transfer case fiasco, where I spun the fluid out of the pinhole and fried the internals.

There were a lot of things about this truck I liked a lot, but this NSBU issue has my patience worn very thin. I'm in the process of visiting some dealerships...if they give me anywhere near a fair trade-in value I am dumping it. I parked my 5th wheel on a year-round campsite and no longer need the power or heft of a 3/4 ton truck. I know this will dismay some of you guys...but I'm thinking pretty seriously about an F-150!

Michigan, near Lansing. Are you asking because you may want to buy this truck?

Silverado 2500HD D/A LS, 140k miles, injectors already done, transfer case already done (with internals), tailgate cables already done, regular oil changes, spray-in bed liner, Extang Full-Tilt tonneau, PullRite SuperGlide 5th wheel hitch (if wanted), Prodigy brake controller, running boards, recent brakes & fuel filter, bug screen, gray color.
Oh, yeah...it also has new PSM and NSBU switches!

no because if you were closer I'd fix it for you.

Dang! Thanks for the offer to help, though. I wish I could bring it to someone who knows what is what with this problem.

Truck is gone, and an '07 F-150 is now in the garage.
