Clunking sound in front end

When I push the 4wd button on my 3500 it clunks for a while until the 4wd is engaged. Hasn't done this in the past, 87,000 miles on it. What should I do?? Please help before somethong breaks. Thanks all!:o

First thing I would do, if the sound of 4HI engaging had changed, in this order:


Check fluid level in xfer case, refill and replace as necessary
Check front driveshaft u-joints at xfer case to front diff, grease (if possible) and replace if necessary
Check front drive axle joints, replace if necessaryAll my stuff 'clunks' at engagement. If you engage on the fly, get your foot out of it and do it while 'coasting'. It will still clunk...
