Can the GM 14 Bolt Gov-Loc be gutted of the Gov-loc parts so it functions like an open diff?

I got my 97 GMC K3500 (217K miles) kinda stuck and in the process of driving it out the locker (Gov-Loc option code G80) made some popping sounds and now when driving on pavement it pops and bangs.

You can replace the diff carrier with an open gear. You can't just "gut" it. The Gov-Loc is pretty easy to service, and parts are available and inexpensive. If the clutch and governor assy's are not damaged, it may be as simple as a governor spring or flyweight. Unless it has some serious damage, it should be relatively inexpensive to repair/refresh. If there are "parts" in the bottom of the housing, it's likely to have taken out the R & P as well. Get the cover off and have a look inside. Drain the lube into a pan so you can see all that comes out. Drag a magnet through the lube to collect anything that isn't where it should be.
