This question might be better served in the tech forum but for some reason I can't post there. I am currently in a rebuild and am wondering if the 97's actually already have a high volume oil pump or is there a better pump to use or do I just change the cooling nozzles? Was there a difference in pumps from year to year on these? Is the high volume pump strictly after market? Thanks for any input.
if you got the piston oil cooling jets,it should have come with the high flow pump installed origionally on that engine.
The engines with the squirts have a higher flow pump than the non squirt blocks.
I have used the squirt block pump on a non squirt unit and it works fine.
The pressure tends to be a tad higher, most likely due to the fact that there is not nearly the oil loss in the system.
These engines do not need high pressure but rather high volume to keep things happy.
A factory style pump is the ticket.
The aftermarket pumps come without the pickup tube.
I prefer the factory pump (GM) as they come with a pickup already installed.
I have seen pickups that were reinstalled on new pumps, fall out.
If you are going to reuse an old pickup its best to red locktite or better yet, Braze the tube into the housing.
I would suggest for good piece of mind to use a factory part from Ma General.

Thanks everybody, I kind of suspected that they used a higher volume pump.
