Any pearls of wisdom for one about to buy a 99 6.5 Savana?

Hello!

I am about to buy my first diesel - a 1999 GMC Savana cargo van with the 6.5 at 133,000 miles on the odometer. I am going to bring it over to a diesel mechanic tomorrow to have him do a "pre-purchase inspection" of the van.

Is there anything I should specifically have him look for? Besides the typical maintenance issues that any vehicle would need, are there any known, common issues with these vans?

Discovering how well the engine starts after an overnight shut-down will tell you a lot about the glow system, fuel injection system, fuel supply system, engine compression, starter, and batteries. Depending on the overnight low temperature, the engine should start quickly and begin running smoothly soon after starting. There may be some white smoke during startup, but it should quickly disappear as the engine continues to run.
