Greetings. This is my first post and it might be a stupid one...

Is it possible to drop my 2002 VW Golf TDI engine into a Jeep Wrangler? I understand that it's not just a matter of "dropping it in," but are there ways of making it work (ie - are there mechanics that can do the conversion)?

If the answer to that question is "yes," would my ordinary gas mileage (approx. 35 MGP) dip significantly? The new Wranglers get 15/19 MPG. I was wondering if I'd be able to get something fairly similar (~25-30 MPG).

Also, would I run into trouble with inspections/emissions testing?

I appreciate any help/clarification that people can provide.

- Phill

My first thought is 'anything is possible'...but on the heels of that...

TDI engine, drivetrain are engineered for front wheel drive, steering, etc
Jeep Wrangler is 4WD - or 2WD with rear driving wheelsTo that end, it would be a complex and very expensive swap, unless you have the skills and tools to do it yourself.

How about a diesel Jeep Liberty - and figure out why they don't get the mileage that Golf TDI diesels get? Probably could be tuned or modified to do much better than factory stock...with tricks learned here on TDP that apply to any diesel engine, big or small including opening up factory intake and exhaust systems for better 'breathing', modifying fuel and boost rates, tire sizes and gear ratios, etc...

Overland Diesel (http://overlanddiesel.com/71/89.html) swapped a VW diesel into a Jeep CJ3b. They made a custom adapter to fit the engine to the T90 transmission.

Acme adapters (http://www.acmeadapters.com/store_engine.php) makes an adapter kit for a VW to a Suzuki or Toyota drivetrain, so that may be an option.

IMHO, I think the 6.2 or 6.5 is suited for a Wrangler, and most of the small block adapter kits will work with the 6.2 & 6.5s. If you gear it right and keep your foot out of it you should be able to get at least 25 mpg.
